In Hollywood, Good = White

I've been hearing for a while now about how the makers of the upcoming Avatar movie have cast a number of white actors to play characters who are not so white in the animated series. But this image posted on Racialicious today is pretty telling:

Wouldn't you love it if either of those white kids was actually named Katara or Sokka?

Why is the villain white in the original cartoon? Shouldn't the Japanese adore white people like everyone else does?

He looks pretty Asian to me, despite being lighter-skinned than the others. Still, the way the casting ended up just seems so weird to me.

Oddly enough the villain was originally to be played by Arron Carter, no joke.

I don't know if that would have been better or worse.

This infuriates me to know ends. I love White people and all, but NO. Just no. The characters are meant to be Asian, so give aspiring Asian actors and actresses some work already! We have absolutely NO shortage of White actors and actresses and besides, they eventually they out grow their typecast and get replaced by more White actors and actresses fitting the bill!
