The Onion IS supposed to be funny, isn't it?

Will somebody who gets it please explain the joke to me?

I'm guessing that the joke is how the media sensationalizes stories like this, and seems to shamelessly try to make stories of rape titillating. It's a good point to make, but it's still not funny. I definitely think that they dropped the ball on this one.

Not their best work, but yeah, they were trying to comment on the obvious prurient interest of the news mavens in the "young pretty white girl in peril" stories. They've been better, but nobody bats 1.000.

I figured that's what the idea was, but the way they went about it was definitely in poor taste. I was sort of appalled.
